If you can smell your dog before you see your dog – it’s time for a real bath!

Unlike their feline counterparts, most dogs love the water. Then again, have you ever watched your dog rub, rock and roll around on the ground while licking and nipping at his coat and paws? That’s his way of taking a bath. 

However, as our PAW-TIP suggests, occasionally you’ll want to give him a good old-fashioned bath – with soap and water. 

Dog Baths Indoor or Au Naturel?

Whether you choose a cozy bathroom or the great outdoors, use a shampoo specially formulated for your dog’s skin – human shampoos are not recommended as they can actually dry out or irritate the skin. 

Ask your veterinarian if you have questions about specialty shampoos to address skin conditions such as infections, parasites (fleas, mites, lice) or allergies triggered by environmental factors. 

Let the Bath Begin

• First, give your dog a good brushing to remove excess hair and tangles. 

• Wet his body with lukewarm (not hot) water using a plastic pitcher or hose with a gentle spray.

• Apply shampoo and work thoroughly into his coat from neck to tail. Pay close attention to the underside, feet and hard-to-reach areas.

• Avoid getting shampoo or water in your dog’s eyes, ears and nose by cupping your hand over them when washing his face.

• Rinse completely and remove all soap residue to minimize flaking.

• Towel dry thoroughly. You can use a blow dryer on the lowest setting if you dog doesn’t try to eat it.

• Voila, clean dog!
